Monkey See, Monkey Do
Synopsis
This puppet opera was based on a Mexican Folk
tale about a sombrero salesman who’s hats are stolen by a mischievous band of
monkeys. The hat seller implores them to give him back his hats, but the monkeys
only mimic his every move. In desperation he throws down his hat and all the
monkeys, true to form, do the same.
Robert Rodriguez used the same story to create a puppet opera for children with
a cast of villagers, an organ grinder, and his lovely daughter. The audience
learns the ABCs of opera and how to sing along as well.

The opera is enacted with 4-5 foot tall rod puppets, and the audience gets to learn all about opera during an interactive demonstration.
