HUDSON VAGABOND PUPPETS, incorporated in 1980 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit company, our theatrical organization, based in Rockland County, consists of professional dancers and actors, performing with giant puppets. Our troupe performs educational and entertaining puppet theater for children and their families, both in the community and in schools. All of our performance content is designed to fit into New York State’s school curriculum – not just in the arts but also the sciences, social studies, language arts and literacy. Our puppeteers borrow from the traditional Japanese Bunraku style of puppetry. Clad in black, our performers become shadows behind the colorful and larger than life size puppets.
HVP performs more than 100 times per year for over 50,000 students, teachers, and families throughout the country. Along with elementary schools, we perform in concert halls, theaters, festivals, colleges, and major performing arts centers including The Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Institute, Orange County Performing Arts Center, The Broward Center for the Arts, The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, among others.
Narrated ballets are a specialty of our company. Our puppets have danced with symphony orchestras including The Little Orchestra Society at Avery Fischer Hall, The Wheeling W. VA Symphony, The St. Louis Symphony, The Detroit Symphony, Pennsylvania Center Chamber Orchestra, The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, and The United States Military Concert Band at West Point.
Our events are made possible through public funding from the New York State Council of the Arts.
